NEW DELHI : One of the most anticipated Hindu festivals, Diwali is just around the corner. Often regarded as the ‘festival of lights’, it is celebrated with much abandon and gusto to mark the triumph of good over evil. This year, it will be celebrated on November 7.

Preparations for the festivities begin from days in advance. Rooms are cleaned, new clothes are worn and houses and offices are adorned with lights and brilliant rangolis.

Rangoli is a popular folk art and is known by different names in different parts of the country. In the south it is known as Kolam, while in West Bengal it is known as Alpona. There are special rangoli powders available in the market. Some also make rangoli designs with grounded rice powder, while others decorate the rangoli with candles and diyas. It is generally created near the doorstep or on the verandah/courtyard of the house.
