Price Hike: Tomatoes and Onions prices have shot up in markets..!!

NEW DELHI: Tomatoes and Onions are the most important ingredient for every Indian household. These two common vegetable items are used very conveniently in the process of food making. Every year, prices of vegetables like potatoes, tomatoes, onions, beans, and peas give a terrific situation to the “Aam Janta”. This year, tomato prices gain tremendous hike in the national capital by up to 90 per cent to Rs 90-100 per kg in a fortnight due to crop damage in producing states.

There are reports where local vendors are selling tomatoes at the price of 100-120 per kg. Traders said that they have to sell into higher prices to shortage supply. Because of heavy rainfall, the supply of tomatoes are instantly gone double in retail markets due to shortage. Its been reported that near by Mother dairy joints selling tomatoes at the rate of 95-96 rs per kg whereas retail online vegetable suppliers like big basket and Grofers are selling them of at 100-120Rs. per kg.

Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Telegana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa and West Bengal are the major states who produce large amount of tomatoes. But due to heavy rainfall or dried up regions like Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Gujarat has almost lost their suppliers this year.

Meanwhile, the central government said the price rise in tomato is a “seasonal phenomena” and it is keeping a close watch on the price movement.

“Tomato is a perishable item. We are keeping a close watch on prices. The states have also been told to be vigilant so that there is no artificial shortage of supplies and price hike,” Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan told PTI.
