NEW DELHI: Various speakers from the legal  community came to a consensus that  Ram Jethmalani was a doyen of  Indian judiciary  and made an impact on it while addressing in November gathering at the grand memorial lecture at Teen Murti Bhawan recently.

Organised by ANZ LAWZ,  Mahesh Jethmalini, his son and a senior advocate of repute, said that his father was advised by his seniors that he should go to India due to security reasons at the time of partition.  He was practising in Pakistan which was part of India.

Ram Jethmalani, it may be recalled, zoomed to fame during the now infamous case of Nanawati. The case became prominent as it involved a decorated Navy officer KM Nanavati, who killed his wife’s lover Prem Ahuja.

Speaking on the occasion, Justice A. K. Sikri, International Judge, Singapore, revealed that his last argument was before him before he died  after a prolonged illness in September this year.

Sanjay R. Hegde, Senior Advocate paid homage to the man described by him as unparallel in the legal fraternity. Ram Jethmalani’s wife Lataa, though, did not speak, expressed the vacuum created by him through her tearful eyes.

Prominent among those present were senior advocates S.Ganesh and Osama Suhail who was also the convenor of the event.

Ram Jethmalani passed away at the age of 95, leaving behind a huge void in India’s legal circle. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “India has not only lost an exceptional lawyer but also an iconic personality.”

Over the span of his career, Jethmalani had a strong impact on the judiciary of the country and appeared in many high-profile cases, some of which are still referred for teaching tricks of the trade to budding law students.
