Serena Jameka Williams, American professional tennis player, who is ranked no.1 in a Women’s Singles by World Tennis Association (WTA) wins 22nd Grand Slam title in Wimbledon 2016 final by beating Angelique Kerber 7-5, 6-3 at the All England Lawn Tennis Club on July 9th 2016 in London.
This was Williams’ seventh singles trophy at the All England Club – only Martina Navratilova, with nine, has more in the Open era – and her second in a row. Kerber had beaten Williams in the Australian Open final in January but could not produce another shock. Williams ends a losing run at Slams stretching back to Wimbledon last year. Fourteen years since she first won Wimbledon, Williams claimed the title for a seventh time after dropping just one set all tournament.
“Yeah, it’s been incredibly difficult not to think about it. I had a couple of tries this year,” Williams said during the trophy ceremony. “But it makes the victory even sweeter to know how hard I worked for it.”
Serena was pushed hard by Kerber in a high-quality clash lasting 81 minutes on Centre Court, but the German fourth seed eventually crumbled under a barrage of 39 winners and 13 aces from the defending champion.
