NEW DELHI: The upcoming period drama Padmavati film, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali is still on the verge of debates between content and the rajputs community. Deepika Padukone as Rani Padmavati, Shahid Kapoor as Rawal Ratan Singh and Ranveer Singh as Alauddin Khilji are playing leading characters in a historic Indian period film which is scheduled for its release on December 1. It also stars Jim Sarabh and Aditi Rao Hydari. It is co produced by Viacom 18 Motion Pictures and Bhansali Productions. Sanjay Leela Bhansali is a renowned filmmaker who got honoured by prestigious Padma Shri award for his contribution in Indian Cinema. He has won several Filmfare and IIFA awards for his films like Devdas, Black, Goliyon ki Raasleela Ram Leela, and his last release Bajirao Mastani.
The most efficient filmmaker Sanjay leela Bhansali known for its real content which is well described in his films. He always indulge in some kind of political controversy related to his films by right wing parties. His new release, Padmavati is based on the life and the time period of 13th century of Rajput Princess Padmini of Chittaurgarh who self immolation over being captivated by Allauddin Khilji. Now for his latest release, Padmavati got highlighted due to the protesters who even assaulted Bhansali on the sets while shooting for the film. Even whole Bollywood came across to support him and made their appeal to government to protect the entire film fraternity from this “jungle raj” system.
Now the Rajput Karni Sena who claimed themselves as the supporters of Rajput Community demanded that the scenes to be cut short from the film. There are rumours that their queen Padmavati shown love interest of Allauddin Khilji which is led to the protectors of religious sentiments taking the efforts on themselves to protect and save the dignity of their former queen. Karni Seva activists created hazardous situation on the sets of the film and damaged the on set property. Sena people even held gatherings to support ban on the film while they also called for bandh in Chittorgarh against the film Padmavati. Even the local people were came to support the off day on the date of release which lead to create political pressure on current government. BJP state vice president and Kshatriya leader IK Jadeja has written to the Election Commission, the Centre and the Central Board of Film Certification demanding that Padmavati’s release should be stopped.
The protestors from Chittorgarh which is known for Queen Padmavati’s hometown are demanding to stop the release while recently Union Minister Uma Bharati took twitter to reason her opinion by stating, “Why not form a committee with historians, the filmmaker, the protesters and the censor board and take a decision? I request to not associating the film Padmavati with the Rajput Community instead with the pride of Indian women.” While Congress Party leader and national spokesperson Shaktisinh Gohil said,”With elections round the counter, a Minister from BJP has written to the Election Commission seeking a ban on Padmavati till the elections are over. It is your government ,write to the PM.” He demanded a special screening for community leaders and states that after that if they have any objections, then they should cut those scenes to preserve the dignity of Indian history.”
Therefore Election Commission refuses to delay the release of the film. EC has sought a report to sought out the situation by providing fair chance to get pre release screening to alleviate the unnecessary tension between the film industry and the protestors.
